Hip Pain

Aching or pain in the hip, groin or buttock, from muscle strain, overuse or joint wear.

What is Hip Pain?

Hip pain can be caused by muscle or tendon strain, overuse, bursitis (inflamed fluid-filled sacs), osteoarthritis or problems referred from the lower back.

Many hip problems improve with gentle exercise, strengthening and treatment to release tight muscles around the hip and pelvis.

Common signs

  • Pain in the hip, groin or outer thigh
  • Stiffness or reduced movement
  • Pain when walking, climbing stairs or lying on one side
  • Limping or difficulty putting weight on the leg
  • Pain after sitting for long periods

How can therapists help?

Physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors can assess hip and pelvic movement and provide treatment and exercises. Deep tissue and sports massage can ease tight hip flexors, glutes and thigh muscles, and Pilates helps build supporting strength.
