Tennis & Golfer's Elbow

Pain around the outside or inside of the elbow, usually caused by overusing the forearm muscles.

What is Tennis & Golfer's Elbow?

Tennis elbow causes pain on the outside of the elbow, and golfer's elbow on the inside. Despite the names, both are most often caused by repetitive gripping, lifting or wrist movements at work, in DIY or in sport — not just tennis or golf.

They usually get better over time with rest from aggravating activities, exercises and treatment.

Common signs

  • Pain on the outside or inside of the elbow
  • Pain when gripping, lifting or twisting
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain that spreads into the forearm
  • Tenderness when pressing near the elbow

How can therapists help?

Physiotherapists can give specific strengthening exercises and advice on activity changes. Sports massage, soft tissue therapy and trigger point work can ease tight forearm muscles, and treatments such as acupuncture, dry needling or shockwave therapy may help some people.
