Whiplash

Neck pain and stiffness caused by a sudden jolt to the head, often from a car accident.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by the head moving suddenly forwards, backwards or sideways — most commonly in a road accident, but also from sport or a fall. It stretches and strains the muscles and ligaments in the neck.

Symptoms can appear hours after the injury. Most people recover within a few weeks to a few months, and keeping the neck gently moving usually helps.

Common signs

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Difficulty moving your head
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders
  • Pain in the shoulders or arms

How can therapists help?

Physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors can help restore neck movement and reduce pain with treatment and exercises. Soft tissue and remedial massage can ease muscle spasm and tension once the initial injury has settled.
