Migraines & Headaches

Recurring headaches or migraines, including tension headaches linked to tight neck and shoulder muscles.

What is Migraines & Headaches?

Tension-type headaches are the most common kind and often feel like a tight band around the head. They are frequently linked to stress, poor posture, tiredness and tight muscles in the neck and shoulders.

Migraines are usually a moderate or severe throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, and can come with sickness or sensitivity to light and sound. Some people find complementary therapies help reduce how often or how strongly they occur.

Common signs

  • Pressure or a tight band across the forehead
  • Throbbing pain, often on one side (migraine)
  • Sensitivity to light, sound or smells
  • Tight neck and shoulder muscles
  • Headaches triggered by stress, screens or poor sleep

How can therapists help?

Massage of the head, neck and shoulders can ease muscle tension that contributes to tension headaches. Osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists may help where neck stiffness or posture is a factor, and some people find acupuncture, craniosacral therapy or relaxation-based therapies help reduce frequency.
